On October 19th, 2022, TekRevol was invited at FAST – NUCES (National University of Emerging Sciences) to conduct a workshop on “succeeding as a developer in 2023” for their final year computer science students at their main campus in Karachi.
The workshop was named ‘Guru Lecture,’ where many industry leaders participated in empowering the students by sharing their wisdom and past experiences. Mr. Ahsan Majid, VP of Production, and other production team members represented TekRevol in the workshop and shared insights and practical knowledge on how to succeed as a developer in this digital age.
Starting from the basics, Ahsan highlighted the most important tech stack to master Android app development, and shared the emerging trends in the industry that are transforming the future of Android development. He then shared his thoughts on the importance of soft skills to acquire leadership roles and concluded his lecture by inviting the students to apply for TekRevol’s MTO program in Android development.
Key Takeaways
Here’s a breakdown of Ahsan Majid’s lecture on the roadmap to Android development:
Pick a Language
In order to succeed as a developer, you need to have a strong command of programming languages. And while algorithm design and logic building are considered the backbone of development, Ahsan believes having expertise in at least one programming language is crucial to succeeding as a developer.
Ahsan advised students to master Kotlin programming language, as Google itself announced Kotlin to be their preferred language for Android development. Ahsan shared the top resources (both paid and free) to learn Kotlin programming and provided a detailed 4 monthly checklist to learn Android development using Kotlin.
Build a Network
Ahsan advised students to build a strong network before entering the market. He believes that networking is the key to having a successful career ahead. And while networking on technical platforms like GitHub and Source Forge is crucial for keeping up with the emerging trends and technologies in development, building a strong network on LinkedIn is equally important, if not more. It gives exposure to the professional world and brings new horizons before them.
Master Soft Skills
Ahsan believes that soft skills matter more than technical skills in leadership roles. He advised students to master communication and presentation skills, learn time management and personal branding, and develop empathy.
In this age of quiet quitting, the world needs leaders, not managers. In order to build a trustworthy team and attract a talented pool of professionals, you need to have strong leadership qualities, such as effective task delegation, the ability to provide constructive feedback, and empathy.
Internships & MTO Programs
TekRevol has recently launched several internships and training programs for fresh computer science graduates on its Karachi campus. This program is aimed at helping students get exposure to the professional world of development and get hands-on experience and on-job training from industry leaders.
The first MTO program was a success. Around 80% of the fresh graduates and final-year students from the first MTO batch were hired as full-time employees at TekRevol after completing their training period.
